Preparatory phase for a European production capability to secure a supply of HALEU fuel
High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU) is a critical component for research reactors and the production of medical radioisotopes, which are indispensable for nuclear safety, research, and 40 million annual nuclear medicine procedures worldwide. To lessen the EU's dependency on Russia and the United States, the PreP-HALEU initiative is actively preparing to develop a European capability.
It aims to supply decision-makers with technical, economic, and regulatory data and to rally stakeholders around a European HALEU capability. As part of this ongoing initiative, working groups are delving into the study of enrichment, metallisation, and transport, with the goal of producing a summary for the decision phase.
