Technology to recover Critical Raw Materials and other byproducts


The EU-funded ION4RAW project delivered an innovative mineral processing technology, combining energy and material efficiency with cost-effectiveness. Using Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES) and advanced electrochemical methods, this technology recovered by-products from primary sources in a single step, mainly Critical Raw Materials and key product metals.

 

LGI carried out the sustainability assessment and devised the exploitation strategy, including life cycle assessment, market analysis, roadmap, technical recommendations, and dissemination.

 

Project completed in 4 years with 13 partners.

  • Market analysis for by-product recovery using Deep Eutectic Solvent (DES), including extensive interviews and economic benefit assessment
  • Identification of potential European mines for upscaling the ION4RAW technology (in collaboration with BRGM)
  • Life cycle assessment (LCA) of the ION4RAW technology, comparing it to existing technology and assessing impact reduction
  • Project communication, video and website content production
