Scaling solar hydrogen: PH2OTOGEN’s path to market

Published On:

In response to the growing demand for clean energy solutions, LGI Sustainable Innovation is actively contributing to the advancement of solar-driven hydrogen production through the PH2OTOGEN project. This groundbreaking initiative aims to develop a scalable device that harnesses sunlight to generate clean hydrogen and other valuable products, opening new avenues for sustainable energy systems and revenue opportunities.

As part of this effort, LGI has been leading the development of exploitation strategies to ensure that PH2OTOGEN's innovative technologies transition from research to market. By identifying commercialisation pathways, engaging key stakeholders, and defining business models, we are working to bridge the gap between scientific achievements and real-world applications. Innovation must not remain confined to laboratories; its true impact lies in its ability to drive meaningful change in society.

Supported by the European Union and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, PH2OTOGEN unites eight partners from five countries to push the boundaries of solar-to-hydrogen conversion. The project integrates cutting-edge material discovery techniques to maximise efficiency, targeting over 5% solar-to-hydrogen conversion for more than 500 hours in a 500 cm² prototype. These advancements mark a significant step toward scalable and commercially viable hydrogen production.

Looking ahead, sustainability and scalability remain central to LGI’s mission. Beyond technological advancements, our focus now shifts to ensuring long-term impact by fostering collaborations between public and private stakeholders. By combining insights from market studies, business analysis, and technological assessments, we are committed to transforming clean hydrogen innovation into a practical and widely adopted energy solution.

Through these efforts, LGI aims to align PH2OTOGEN with Europe’s ambitious energy transition goals. By facilitating the commercialisation of breakthrough technologies, we contribute to a cleaner and more resilient energy landscape. Whether by supporting policymakers in adopting hydrogen strategies or helping industries integrate sustainable energy solutions, our work underscores the vital role of innovation in achieving a carbon neutral future.
